    The high cost of Saffron is due to the fact that the threads are the true stigma of a certain crocus flower and must be picked by hand. Luckily, a touch of saffron goes a long way. In reality, a dish with an overpowering, medicinal taste may be ruined by too much saffron. In fact, however, saffron does not necessarily cost any more than other seasonings.
    Look for uniformly woven, bright red or deep orange threads as you shop for saffron. Lighter threads or a lot of pale stripes suggest poor consistency. Powdered saffron is something you want to avoid, which, like other flavorings, is often cheaper but also inferior and adulterated.
